Initiated in 2001, the Prairie Writers Circle brings together writers in Kansas and nationally who produce op-ed commentary for newspapers large and small to encourage wider public awareness of ecological and sustainability issues important to the Land Institute's mission.
A thread that runs through much of the Circle's work is the need for sustainability in agriculture and community. Topic examples: industrial agriculture and the problems it poses, water quality, climate change, energy efficiency, land use, habitat preservation, biotechnology, environmental politics, and the relationship between the environment and human health.
The Circle's essays have appeared in such newspapers as the Los Angeles Times, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Des Moines Register.
